Fahadh Faasil's movies always offer the unexpected, and his catalogue of awards over the past decade is a testament to his consistency.
I am pleased to report that Paachuvum Atbhutha Vilakkum maintains the standard, although perseverance is required to reap the rewards of this unusual drama.
This is a surprising voyage of discovery on several levels for the low-key owner of a chemist store and clinic in Mumbai.
The film's opening focuses on his failure to find a wife, having turned down multiple proposals by the age of 34.
It then shifts to Kochi, and he is asked to take his landlord's mother back to Mumbai by train.
However, the fall of the metaphorical dominoes leads to him being embroiled in a tangled web and, simultaneously, falling for a young woman in Goa.
I have not described the storyline any further because it has many surprises, and I wouldn't wish to spoil it.
But I can report that Anjana Jayaprakash gives a feisty turn as his potential love interest, and Viji Venkatesh is rather splendid as a battleaxe with an unexpected heart of gold.
In addition, there are some fantastic backdrops in Goa and Mumbai.
Paachuvum Atbhutha Vilakkum may be a bit far-fetched and too long, but it is smartly directed by Akhil Sathyan and worth sticking with.

The final word. Akhil Sathyan: "Nivin Pauly could not take up the film since he was busy with ‘Thuramukham’. I had never planned to approach Fahadh for the film knowing his busy schedule. However, one day, Shaanu (Fahadh) and I chanced to have a conversation about the film. After hearing the plot line, Fahadh asked me if he could do the project." Onmanorama
