Barbie; movie review

BARBIE

BBFC advice: Contains moderate innuendo, brief sexual harassment, implied strong language

It's the biggest box office success of the year, and at least it's original, but Mrs W and I didn't love Barbie as much as others seem to have.
For us, its much-acclaimed feminist plotline was a bit obvious and a tad repetitive.
On the plus side, it is breezy, and Margot Robbie is spot-on as the perfect girl who suddenly realises that life isn't a box of chocolates.
Robbie plays stereotypical Barbie who lives next to the beach in a town run by women, all named Barbie.
She gets up every morning smiling in her perfect home, waves to everyone in her neighbourhood and then heads to the beach.
Women have all the best jobs in the town and are all called Barbie - right up to the President.
Meanwhile, men watch on semi-enviously and are all called Ken.
These include a blonde-haired lad, played by Ryan Gosling, who would love for Robbie's Barbie to be his girlfriend.
Indeed, he stows away in her car when she goes on a mission to the real world to find out why she suddenly has negative feelings.
There, they discover a world where the roles of women and men are reversed.
This battle of the sexes is at the heart of Greta Gerwig's movie, which is much more about questioning the patriarchy than a tale about dolls.
It is effervescent and has earworm songs and a natty choreography, but I expected more impact from one of the top hits of 21st-century cinema.

Did you know? Originally, Mattle
sold picture frames and plastic furniture. Co-founder Ruth Handler arrived at the idea for Barbie when her family was traveling through Switzerland and her daughter took to a grown-up fashion doll named Lilli. Barbie went to market on September 6, 1959.

The final word. Margot Robbie: "We, of course, would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has. But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie. And in fact, aren’t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that." Vogue
