Asteroid City; movie review

ASTEROID CITY
Cert 12A
105 mins
BBFC advice: Contains suicide references, brief nudity, moderate bad language

It's time to count the movie superstars.
Nobody could accuse Wes Anderson of going for B-listers in his pictures, but a great cast doesn't always make a great picture.
In Asteroid City, spotting the cameos is a welcome distraction from a storyline which is way too clever for its own good.
By the way, Jeff Goldblum's credit for being an unspeaking alien is hilarious. We would never have known it was him.
I digress.
Asteroid City is a tiny outpost in the west, known only for a giant crater.
It is the stop-off point for a father, Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman), and his four children after their car breaks down en route to visit their grandfather (Tom Hanks).
It is also the venue for the celebration of awards to junior stargazers, including Augie's super geek son, Woodrow (Jake Ryan) and the daughter (Grace Edwards) of an aloof movie star (Scarlett Johansson).
The story of Asteroid City is told by a narrator (Bryan Cranston) and is played as if it is a theatre piece with high-brow dialogue so rapid it is almost impossible to follow.
A few strands hold together (both Woodrow and his dad have loose, romantic episodes), but mainly, it comprises a sequence of offbeat scenes.
Few hit the mark with us - indeed, the actors were enjoying a rather elaborate in-joke, and we were on the outside looking in.
Some moments of Anderson's originality will make the movie worth seeing for cinephiles, but the wider public will be bemused.

Overall rating: 4/10

Did you know? Bill Murray has been in all but two of Anderson’s films: his debut Bottle Rocket and now, because to a bout of Covid-19, Asteroid City.

The final word. Wes Anderson: "The company — the group of actors we had on this movie — I had a great time with them, not just making the movie. We all lived together, and we had dinner together every night. … So all of that is kind of connected to the themes of the movie. So much of the movie is about actors. That's quite a specific experience in my life, spending time with actors. It's moved me." KCRW
