BBFC advice: Contains implied strong language
A modern Chinese Sex in The City with younger women and without the boobs.
Delicious Romance is the movie spin-off of a successful TV series aired in the Far East. It centres on three lasses and their successes and failures in love and work.
Leste Chen and Chao-jen Hsuis's film is set in the recent aftermath of Covid with some regulations still in place.
It stars Chun Li, Hanyun Zhang and Ju Wang as three former school friends who are still best pals in their 30s.
They all look good, go to the fanciest shops and restaurants, and, inevitably, have complex relationships.
Zhang's Fan Xin is pregnant but not on the same page as her protective partner, who dogs her every attempt to enjoy herself and settle into her new job in a fashion house.
Ju Wang's Xia Meng is desperately trying to impress her media company and uses her reluctant boyfriend to try to hook the account of a young and hip game designer.
Finally, Chun Li's Liu Jing is under pressure as her high-end restaurant is in a financial crisis and faces closure.
I shouldn't have enjoyed Delicious Romance because its characters are self-centred and shallow.
For example, Xia Meng has a pouted lip when her pals are less than enthusiastic about reprising a school dance routine for her staff party.
But there is a bit of zest among the trio that attracts, and the sets are rather smart.
Fans of the series will love it, I am sure.
