310. Polite Society; movie review

POLITE SOCIETY
Cert 12A
100 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate threat, violence, sex references, infrequent strong language

It's a British/Asian Kick-Ass, and Polite Society has become one of this year's surprise, feel-good hits.
This is largely down to a smart, funny script and a wonderfully fresh debut from teenager Priya Kansara.
She plays Ria, a feisty lass with an undiluted ambition to be a stuntwoman, no matter how many times she literally lands on her backside.
Her keenest advocate is her older sister (Ritu Arya), a frustrated artist who is being lined up for an arranged marriage.
The idea of losing her is too much for Ria, who, with the help of her best friends (Ella Bruccoleri and Seraphina Beh), tries to prevent the wedding from happening.
The fun comes through the incredible lengths they will go to and the disasters that unfold.
Meanwhile, Nimra Bucha plays the mother of the potential groom (Akshay Khanna) and is the pantomime villain of the movie.
The joy comes from Ria's incredible spirit and imagination - her heart is firmly in the right place but often leads her into trouble.
Bruccoleri is the best of her comic foils with some hilarious exaggerated ripostes.
There is also decent comedy from scenes at Ria's school, where she is desperate to prove herself as a tough girl, and the interactions between Indian aunties.
Nida Manzoor has drawn her characters beautifully - they may be exaggerated, but we found ourselves beguiled by them.
I am looking forward to more of her work and the irrepressible Kansara.

Did you know? Priya Kansara studied molecular biology but walked away from a job in the pharmaceutical industry to become an actress

The final word. Nida Manzoor: "People keep saying [the film reminds them of] Jane Austen a lot, and I didn’t realise that, until I thought, “Oh, yeah, I did read a Jane Austen novel every year in my childhood.” It’s definitely hard-wired into my brain." Filmmaker
