308. Dream Scenario; movie review

DREAM SCENARIO
Cert 15
102 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong violence, threat, bloody images, sex references, language

You have to hand it to Nicolas Cage - his movies may be brilliant or terrible, but they are never dull.
Dream Scenario is sparky and original, made us laugh, and prompted much discussion.
It also includes a stand-out performance from Cage despite being deliberately low-key.
Writer and director Kristoffer Borgli had already set his bar for the highly quirky with Sick Of Myself earlier this year.
Dream Scenario is equally offbeat but more refined, and he found the perfect leading man to carry it off.
Cage stars as a dreary biology professor who, for reasons that cannot be fathomed, appears in people's dreams worldwide.
He goes viral and sees fame as an opportunity to achieve his long unfulfilled ambition to publish a book about his research.
However, he soon finds out that celebrity can be a double-edged sword.
Interestingly, Cage's character is very different to those he usually plays and the polar opposite of Kristine Kujath Thorp's Signe in Sick Of Myself.
She would do anything for fame, milk it and think she deserves it.
Cage's Paul is so ordinary that the actor toned down his voice and had an unfashionable haircut to hammer home the point.
He does not seek notoriety but gains it from literally doing nothing.
Borgli's movie is smart - it attacks the cult of celebrity uniquely and memorably, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
In addition, we have seen few performances as good in 2023 as Cage's in this movie.

Did you know? Dreams usually last from a few seconds to 20 minutes. Very rarely they can last for two hours but this is extremely rare.

The final word.  Kristoffer Borgli: "When I needed the character to go from passive and intimidated to confident and extroverted, I knew that Nic had all of that in him. It’s unleashing the whole spectrum of what Nic Cage is capable of." Indie Wire
