306. Renfield; movie review

RENFIELD
Cert 15
93 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong bloody violence, gore, language, drug misuse

He is so deliciously over the top that Nicolas Cage as Dracula has to be one of the most fun cinematic moments of the year.
Renfield doesn't add up to much as a film and is probably too much akin to a spoof for horror fans, but Cage is at his most rollicking crazy.
He bounces off Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, his man-servant - a somewhat nervous sort who has to provide the Prince of Darkness with a diet of pure humans.
But Renfield has a guilt complex and is trying to find those who he believes deserve to die instead.
This goes down badly with Dracula, and Renfield goes to an AA-style meeting of those who are addicted to poisonous relationships.
Meanwhile, as bloody bodies pile high, an upstanding cop (Akwafina) finds herself trying to stop the slaughter while also combatting the criminal gang, who have many of the police force on their payroll.
The plot may sound convoluted, but it is navigated via Renfield's narration and explanation.
The style of Chris McKay's film wouldn't usually be my bag - spoofs are rarely as funny as they try to be, and scenes awash with fake blood are so common nowadays that they have become dull.
But Cage is something to behold as Dracula and Hoult has a self-effacing allure.
It's undoubtedly daft, but I will remember it for quite a while.
