297. Fast X; movie review

FAST X
Cert 12A
131 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, threat, brief grisly images, infrequent strong language

Did someone ask Jason Mamoa to play a pantomime version of The Joker for over two hours?
His villain in Fast X is laughably over the top, but at least it gave the audience something to remember besides the old stunts and family lectures.
Two years ago, after watching F9, I wrote: "(Vin) Diesel continues the happy knack of sleepwalking his way through movies and being paid fortunes.
Ditto Fast X - he is the same old Dom Toretto doing the same old stuff.
But this isn't the end - Louis Leterrier's movie has a sequel which will not be released until 2025.
His movie is a follow-up in itself - to a heist ten years previously by Dom and his gang, who killed a crimelord in the process.
Now, Mamoa's character seeks vengeance, vowing to kill Toretto and make him suffer.
And we all know how villains can get at him - through his nearest and dearest.
So, with very elaborate ruses, incredible chases on every means of transport imaginable, and a vast variety of explosives, he sets about his task with gusto.
And, to be fair, while the storyline is thin, the special effects and stunts certainly are not.
So, cars are driven out of planes, off a dam, and even chase a giant rolling bomb through the streets of Rome.
Fans will also be pleased by famous names from the franchise (including Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, John Cena, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot) being dripped through the movie.
But those of us who want an engaging story need more than an over-the-top psychopathic villain against Vin Diesel banging on every second sentence about family,
And, by the way, why does he put them in the face of extreme danger if he dotes on them so much?

Did you know? Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster are the only actors left from the first film of the saga.

The final word. Louis Leterrier: " I wanted it to feel like Fast 1, Fast 3, and Fast 5—movies that feel grounded. That is my style, and everyone accepted that, so everyone was really on board. Everyone was excited to re-explore physical stunts." Esquire
