NO HARD FEELINGS

BBFC advice: Contains very strong language, strong sex references, crude humour
Hold on, is that Jennifer Lawrence wrestling naked on a beach?
Call me immature, but there is no doubt that this scene will be the one I will remember most from the romantic comedy No Hard Feelings.
I even read up on whether one of the world's most well-paid actresses had a body double because I was so surprised by what we witnessed.
She has confirmed that she didn't.
But Lawrence says she felt safe and she found the scene simply hilarious. I didn't laugh loudly because my jaw was agape, but I understand her point.
Of course, the beach scene is only one slice of a film that is much funnier than we had expected.
Its initial premise is that a broke Uber driver (Lawrence) from a wealthy seaside town is struggling to find the money to keep the house she inherited from her mother.
Her plight worsens when her car is repossessed, leaving her with next to no income.
Thus, she responds to an unusual online appeal from two rich parents (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) for an older girl to hook up with their ultra-shy, reclusive son (Andrew Barth Feldman).
In essence, they think he should learn to drink and have sex before he goes to university.
Lawrence's character is the perfect choice because she is a heavy-supping, promiscuous commitment-phobe.
However, the kick in the tale of Gene Stupnitsky's movie is that she learns as much from Feldman's awkward but moral nerd as he does from her.
And the chemistry between the pair is just terrific.
Whatever the genre, Lawrence gives everything to her performances. Here, she proves she can do comedy as well as she plays in thrillers and dramas.
Indeed, this is the funniest film I have seen in 2023.

The final word. Jennifer Lawrence: "I think it's time for just a good old-fashioned laugh. And it really is hard to make a comedy where you're not offending people. Everybody in some sense will be offended by this film - you're welcome." Sky News
