279. Nimona; movie review

NIMONA
Cert PG
99 mins
BBFC advice: Contains mild violence, threat, rude humour, upsetting scenes, language

In the past, I might have baulked at an animation in which the strong men kiss while the title character is a flag-waver for trans people.
But Nimona is a film of its age and works because it is action-packed, fun and non-preachy.
Author ND Stevenson identifies as non-binary - their protagonist (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) is a shape-shifter who veers from being a teenage girl to a dragon, gorilla, flying horse and little boy.
She emerges in a small kingdom to become the sidekick of a knight (Riz Ahmed) who has inadvertently killed his country's queen (Lorraine Toussaint) at his swearing-in ceremony.
Troy Quane and Nick Bruno's strange mix of medieval and sci-fi leads to questions over continuity and resolutions.
For example, the knight could easily explain how he knows he has been framed via a simple text but doesn't.
I digress.
Nimona is an impulsive but likeable main character whose interactions with her knight are heartwarming, while the film is fast-flowing.
The action scenes are brimming with derring-do, leaving its audience rooting hard for the good guys.
On the downside, the villain (Frances Conroy) is a tad stereotypical but is balanced out by the lead characters being so different from the norm.
Overall, it is a family movie which would fill an hour and a half during the school holidays.

Reasons to watch: Fast-flowing exciting animation
Reasons to avoid: Medieval and modern doesn't always mix

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Did you know? The song that plays when Nimona (voiced by Chloe-Grace Moretz) is defeating the other knights is the Banana Splits theme song, the same song that plays when Hit-Girl (also played by Chloe-Grace Moretz) has her first fight scene killing drug dealers in Kick Ass.

The final word. ND Stevenson: "It feels so vulnerable to see that part of myself up on screen, and then to see that reaction to that character and the way people are finding their own stories within it. It’s really healing, like I’m sending back this little beacon of hope to who I was first coming up with Nimona."
