BBFC advice: Contains strong threat, sexual threat, injury detail, sex references
Farhana might well be my favourite Indian thriller of the year.
There are some far-fetched moments, but thanks to a riveting performance by Aishwarya Rajesh, I was on tenterhooks for the last hour.
She plays the title character, a quiet mum-of-three who lives with her children, parents and husband (Jithan Ramesh) in a tiny back-street apartment in Chennai.
They are on the breadline because the family shoe shop is no longer making money, while her very traditional Muslim father (Raja Krishnamoorthy) refuses to take loans.
So, she successfully applies for a call centre job, selling premium credit cards to a bank's top clients.
She takes to it like a duck to water but looks enviously when her pal (Anumol) transfers to a mysterious department with much greater incentives.
Desperate for more money, she follows her but finds herself committed to answering calls to an adult chat line.
Nelson Venkatesan's movie is a clash between a devoutly religious world and a carefree secular one, with Farhana caught in the middle.
Thus, she makes some understandably naive decisions, leading to great peril.
Rajesh is completely convincing as the young mum whose home life is poles apart from the separate character she needs to create at work.
Praise is also due to Ramesh as her subdued husband and Kitty as her disgusted father.
They all contribute to a movie that has many clever twists. I found it compelling and believable.
