Can real-life Indian politics be as corrupt as portrayed in the movies?
If we are to believe Raavana Kottam, it is completely rotten.
Vikram Sugumaran's film focuses on villages whose set-up seems idyllic because it defies the party structure.
It stars Shanthanu Bhagyaraj as the son of a village head (Prabhu) whose family have successfully advocated non-interfence from outside for generations.
They preserve peace between villages whose only rivalry seems to be on the kabaddi court.
But a local MP seeks to divide the communities for personal gain and enlists a jealous insider to help.
The beautiful Indhira (Anandhi) becomes his unwitting tool, sparking rivalry between Shanthanu's character and his best friend from a nearby village.
I fell for the concept of a community fighting against party politics and, therefore, engaged with Ravvana Kottam's main characters.
Its problems come with the stereotypical bad guys.
These include the local villain who reports to the MP who, in turn, depends on the environment minister for his job.
They all gnash their teeth a lot and order murders at a whim without the sniff of any consequence.
Raavana Kottam is an intriguing village drama with a promising initial premise, so it is a shame its storyline goes around the houses and it resorts to cliches.
It is also the latest movie to prompt the question - if politicians and the police are so corrupt, why doesn't anyone do anything about it?
