BRAINWASHED: SEX CAMERA-POWER
Cert 18
107 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong nudity, sex, sexual violence

"When I was a teenager, I was always frustrated that there were no c**ks in films."
Mrs W's response to Brainwashed: Sex Camera-Power was pithy, a tad crude but fair.
I am an admirer of the female form but confess to feeling the focus on it in movies is often gratuitous or not balanced out with male bits.
Brainwashed: Sex Camera-Power tells us why there is a concentration on women or even exploitation of them.
And what effects this may have on society as a whole.
Nina Menkes is the director and presenter of a documentary which includes contributions from women in the film industry and female psychologists.
She shows how almost every movie is seen through men's eyes so that there are often out-of-context shots of women's bums, breasts or flat bellies.
This is largely down to only eight per cent of Hollywood directors being female and similar low ratios of cinematographers and studio heads.
Thus, despite improvements in sex equality in other parts of life, women are still objectified in the movies whereas men only show off their bodies while in action scenes.
Menkes explains in detail how that manifests itself in movie cinematography.
The irony is that, in order to prove her point, the film contains more images of naked women and their body parts than any I can remember seeing in the last decade.
Thus, it will become a must-see for oglers of pretty lasses.
That said, the points are well made and via, hard-hitting interviews with the likes of Rosanna Arquette, a clear line is drawn to the #metoo movement.
It is a pity, therefore, that its style is more of a lecture to film studies students than an investigation.

Reasons to watch: Compelling case

Did you know? Of the top-grossing 1,500 films between 2007 and 2021, less than 1% featured a woman or girl of colour in a leading or co-leading role.

The final word. Nina Menkes: "This documentary was about how can we prove our case and have the film be fascinating and interesting for sophisticated filmgoers, as well as some person who is not focusing on film as a profession, but a film watcher, which is kind of everybody." Script
