248. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3; movie review

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
Cert 12A
144 mins
BBFC advice: Contains moderate violence, injury detail, threat, infrequent strong language

We all loved the cuteness of a talking tree, a grumpy raccoon and a flakey ship's commander.
But the problem with the third take of Guardians Of the Galaxy is that the freshness has gone and what remains is a so-so storyline.
So, I am sure Marvel fanatics may bathe in the plot detail and how it may interweave with other movies but all of that is lost on me.
I judge on the standalone film and this was ok. Its sound track is quality, its characters are fairly engaging and its special effects are decent.
Will I remember it past a month? Probably not.
For the record, the good guys, led by Quill (Chris Pratt) set out to save the life of the aforementioned raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) after he is critically injured in an attack on their headquarters.
To do this, they have to find a password to override a kill-switch embedded in him by a meglomaniac (Chukwudi Iwuji) who is trying to create the perfect world.
The mission is complicated by many factors, including Quill's former love (Zoe Saldana) becoming part of the squad.
Anyway, there are scenes of derring-do as the guardians and their allies try to save their friend against almost impossible odds.
The problem is that, aside of the pantomime villain contribution of Iwuji and Will Poulter as his superfast-but-dim sidekick, we have seen so much of it before.
So, Quill is gung-ho, Nebula (Karen Gillan) is wise and fearless, Drax (Dave Bautista) is brave but not very bright, Groot (Vin Diesel) says three words etc etc.
As said, Marvel fans will lap it up but I needed more to engage me.

The final word. James Gunn: "Guardians of the Galaxy is about how we open up and close off, perhaps out of selfishness, or because of our life experiences, whether they’re traumatic or just negative ones, and how we use them as an excuse." Numero
