247. Kindling; movie review

KINDLING
Cert 12A
83 mins
BBFC advice: Contains drug misuse, upsetting scenes

Movies about victims of cancer have a much greater resonance with us since Mrs W was diagnosed 15 months ago.
The good news is that she is recovering well after treatment but the subject is still raw.
That meant that I kept her away from Connor O'Hara's Kindling whose focus is Syd, a young man (George Somner) who knows he is going to die.
Syd has a very clear idea of how he wants to spend his last weeks but often finds his plans at odds with those nearest to him.
This is particularly unfortunate for his mum (Tara Fitzgerald) and especially his dad (Geoff Bell) who see every minute with their son as precious.
They also try to wrap him up in cotton wool but he sees little point in not pushing boundaries, given his prognosis.
He has a group of very close friends to whom he gives a life-changing and unexpected challenge.
Meanwhile, he also finds potential love with a girl (Mia McKenna-Bruce) but wants to avoid her pitying him.
At just 83 minutes, Kindling certainly doesn't outstay its welcome - it gets straight to the nub of a difficult subject matter.
Because of my age, I was most affected by the fallout on Syd's parents and was particularly empathetic towards Bell's character.
But I struggled with the overall concept of how Syd wanted to spend his last weeks and have to admit that I found it too upsetting to immerse myself too much.

Did you know?  Since the early 1990s, incidence rates for cancers in young people have increased by around a quarter (24%) in the UK. Rates in females have increased by more than a third (35%) and rates in males have increased by a seventh (14%).

The final word. Connor O'Hara: "We made this film for the everyday person. We wanted it to sit between an arthouse and a commercial film that could be accessible to all audiences." Yahoo!
